Black River Canal Trails

Enjoy hiking, biking or skiing from the Canal Museum to Pixley Falls via the Black River Canal Trail and BREIA trails or start at the covered bridge near Erwin Park and hike, bike or snowmobile (or kayak) the Black River Feeder Canal Trail to Forestport. Be sure to check out the Whipple Bridge on the Black River Canal Trail (between Canal Museum and Tops Plaza).

The Black River Outdoor Education Program works to establish an understanding of our ecosystem by providing students with lessons in geology, ecology, biology and history while engaging in various outdoor aerobic activities. Activities include kayaking, biking, hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Black River Environmental Improvement Association (BREIA)

The Black River Environmental Improvement Association (BREIA) features over 50 km of skiing, hiking and biking trails located on Egypt Rd, the Canal trails and Jackson Hill trails. Snowshoe and ski rentals are available via Boonville Search and Rescue located at the far right of Tops Plaza (13209 State Route 12) where Canal trail is accessed.
Dodge Pratt Northam Art and Community Center

Take a free tour of the historical Dodge Pratt Northam Art and Community Center (hours listed on website) to view exhibits and check out the gift shop. Originally built in 1875 by Clark Dodge and designed by architect Azel J. Lathrop of Utica, the house was repurposed in 1974 as an art and community center and is on the National Register of Historic Homes.
Erwin Park

This 1.5-acre facility features two playground areas (one on north end near pool, a larger area on south end), basketball and tennis courts, and a large field in between that is used for AYSO soccer and softball games in summer months. Erwin Park is connected to the Black River Feeder Canal trail via the covered bridge.
